But They Still Hit the Bullseye

I don’t think I could (or should) ever be compared to Tony Banks, Rick Wakeman or Keith Emerson, though Lynn possibly could be. I’m still a prog-rock fan to this day, but my keyboard skills were and are mediocre at best.

My personal playing style, with lots of full 3- and 4-note chords (and bass notes too!), did tend to fill things up a lot.  The big, chorusy organ and string sounds didn’t help either. Peter had a running battle to rein in my arrangements, but in the later months of my tenure, I really did try to think lines, not chords when arranging and playing parts. It was high praise for me when Peter said my bits on “Red Toyota” were “…better than usual”. They must have been better-Lynn played variations on two of the bits I came up with for that song.

Speaking as one formerly known as Jan Hammer Jr., a former Thomas Dolby devotee, and self-styled ‘Daryl Dragon for the 90’s’ - it was about context, period. Block chords against jangly guitars read like an accordion (I have nothing against accordions). Another species.
